Surgeon-Scientist Research Track

The General Surgery Residency Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has established a Surgeon-Scientist Research Track for candidates committed to a basic or translational research-based academic career. This track will place the resident on a required research period after their PGY-3 year.

We are committed to training and nurturing surgeon-scientists by providing them with all the necessary tools for launching successful careers in academic medicine. There is protected time for research productivity, opportunities to collaborate with faculty mentors in the Department of Surgery and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, as well as funds available to attend conferences to present research.

The Surgeon-Scientist Research Track has a separate NRMP number from the General Surgery program code. This track will match two categorical residents in July 2024 which will reduce the regular categorical track to 10. If the Surgeon-Scientist matches less than the two, each unmatched position will revert to the traditional categorical match.
